American Estimate Hub

Insulation estimates measured by area and R-value.

Insulation takeoffs for walls, attics, floors, and roofs: batts, blown-in, spray foam, and rigid board by SF and R-value.

Insulation quantities depend on the assembly. We measure exterior walls, interior sound walls, attics, floors over unconditioned space, and roof decks by SF, then break them out by insulation type, thickness, and R-value as specified.

Batts are converted to bags or rolls, blown-in insulation is calculated by depth and coverage, spray foam is quantified by board feet, and rigid board is taken off by sheet. Air barriers, vapor retarders, and firestopping can be included when they are in your scope.

CSI MasterFormat divisions

  • Division 07 — Thermal and Moisture Protection

What we quantify

  • Wall batt insulation (SF / bags)
  • Attic blown-in insulation (SF / bags)
  • Spray foam insulation (SF / BF)
  • Rigid board insulation (SF / sheets)
  • Floor and crawlspace insulation (SF)
  • Sound attenuation batts (SF)
  • Air and vapor barriers (SF)
  • Baffles and attic accessories (EA)

What the estimate accounts for

  • Framing factor: Wall cavity area is measured net of openings, and stud spacing determines batt width and coverage.
  • Settled depth: Blown-in quantities are based on the specified R-value and settled depth from manufacturer coverage charts.
  • Code and specification: R-values follow the drawings and specifications; where they are silent, the assumption is stated for you to confirm.
  • Access and height: Tall walls, vaulted ceilings, and cathedral roofs are noted because they affect installation method and labor.

Who orders it

  • Insulation contractors
  • Home builders
  • General contractors

Frequently asked questions

Do you convert spray foam to board feet?

Yes. Spray foam is measured by SF and multiplied by the specified thickness in inches to calculate board feet, which is how most spray foam work is priced.

Can you separate insulation by R-value?

Yes. Each assembly is listed by insulation type, thickness, and R-value so you can price each product separately.

Is insulation included in a full estimate?

Yes, it is part of Division 07 in a full estimate. It can also be ordered as a standalone takeoff.
